Robert Whittaker gives health update after Dana White drops staph infection bomb

Australia’s first UFC belt holder was forced to withdraw from his first title defence, which was supposed to see him take on former 185lbs champion Luke Rockhold, earlier this month due to illness.

Last weekend, UFC president Dana White revealed that was the result of him having a staph infection in his stomach and that he’ll likely be on the sidelines for a considerable amount of time.

“He had staph infection in his stomach,” White told TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter.

“From what I understand it wasn’t treated properly and started to eat away at parts of his organs.

“He’s in serious condition, so it’s going to be a minute before he’s back, I think.

“Hopefully it turns around quick, but that stuff is life-threatening if not treated the right way.”

Whittaker has not confirmed his alleged bout of staph infection but has revealed he is under the weather in a recent Instagram post.

“Sick as a dog, but at least my nutrition is on point @musclemealsdirect,” the post read.

“Thanks for all the well wishes guys #ontheroadtorecovery.”

Whittaker’s withdrawal from UFC 221 has resulted in the UFC brass booking an interim middleweight title bout between Rockhold and Yoel Romero.

UFC 221 takes place at the Perth Arena in Perth, Australia on February 10 and is headlined by an interim middleweight title fight between former champion Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero.
