Conor McGregor’s status as lightweight champion revealed by rival’s manager

McGregor’s status as the ruler of the UFC’s 155lbs division has been up in the air ever since a confusing press conference last month.

In the aforementioned media event, UFC president Dana White claimed the upcoming lightweight bout between interim champion Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov would be for the ‘real title.’

However, when asked if the UFC had relieved the Irishman of the 155lbs title,

His failure to provide clarity on the current state of the division has left many asking themselves the same question: Is Conor McGregor still the UFC lightweight champion?

According to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz, McGregor still sits at the summit of the 155lbs division, but only because he asked the brass not to strip ‘The Notorious’.

“Let me explain to you what’s going on here. I told you this and I’m going to repeat myself again for the last time. Because you’re an instigator on this one, you are. Let me explain to you,” he told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani during an appearance on The MMA Hour.

“One of the things, when the UFC come to me and asked for Khabib to fight for the title.

“I said, ‘Okay, I don’t want Tony Ferguson to become the official champion the same way Conor did.’

“Because I know Tony and Conor have got the same manager. And I’m not going to put a chance that somebody plays games with me. I’m way smarter than people think.

“What I said was, ‘The night of the fight, April 7, to be for the official title.’

“If Tony Ferguson gets injured, Khabib still fights for the title against Gatheje, Poirier, whatever.

“But if I demanded that I want Conor to be stripped, then who is going be the champion? Tony Ferguson.”

Ferguson and Nurmagomedov will finally lock horns with one another in the main event of UFC 223, which takes place at the Barclays Center in New York on April 7.
