Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov bans: Russian chief makes UFC claim

That is the view of Mikhail Mamiashvili, the president of the Russian Wrestling Federation.

Nurmagomedov and McGregor are facing bans on Monday for their role in a brawl triggered after their rumble in the Octagon.

Nurmagomedov beat McGregor but then jumped into the crowd to fight the Irishman’s team-mate, Dillon Danis.

McGregor was also set upon by two of Nurmagomedov’s team-mates – one of which, Zubayra Tuhugov, has subsequently been banned.

Nurmagomedov responded to that ban, claiming he will quit the sport unless Tuhugov is reinstated.

But Mamiashvili reckons Nurmagomedov’s threat will force to UFC to reconsider their decision.

Asked if Nurmagomedov knew what he was doing with the quit threat, Mamiashvili said: “Probably, this was a weighted decision.

“I think he would not take such radical steps if there was really a serious enough investigation and, most importantly, unbiased.”

The will decide on Monday what sanctions to hand down to Nurmagomedov and McGregor.

Nurmagomedov has yet to be given his prize money for the fight, which saw him beat in four rounds thanks to a submission.

The Dagestan native is back home following last weekend’s ruckus but the furore over the aftermath of the fight continues.

He met Vladimir Putin on Thursday and was defended by the Russian president.

“We all understand that is was a provocation,” Putin said.

“I’m sure your father understands that too.

“It was done to provoke you and use it against you in the fight.”
